What is the difference between RS485 protocol and Modbus protocol?

RS485 protocol and Modbus protocol are very important communication protocols in the field of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and automation.Although they are often used together, they have distinct differences in function, scope of application, and structure. It is also important to understand how Industrial IoT Gateway works with these protocols. This article delves into the differences between the RS485 protocol and the Modbus protocol and discusses the Industrial IoT Gateway application.

I. Difference between RS485 protocol and Modbus protocol

① Physical layer and data link layer

· RS485 protocol: RS485 is a standard of physical layer and data link layer.Defines how to perform electrical transmission and signal detection on differential signal lines. It is typically used for multipoint communication, allowing multiple devices to be connected on a single bus.

· Modbus protocol: Modbus is a data link layer protocol that defines how data is transferred between two devices. It can run on many physical layers such as RS485, Ethernet and so on.

② Communication mode

· RS485 protocol: RS485 supports half-duplex and full-duplex communication, and the data transmission rate can reach 10 Mbps.

· Modbus protocol: Modbus is a master-slave communication protocol. In which a master device (usually a host computer or server) communicates with multiple slave devices (usually sensors, actuators, or PLCs Letter.

③ Function and application scope

· RS485 protocol: RS485 only focuses on how to transmit data on the physical layer and data link layer, and does not involve application layer functions.

· Modbus protocol: Modbus defines the functions of the application layer, including data model, data format, command and response.Widely used in the field of industrial automation.

II. Application of Industrial IoT Gateway

Industrial IoT Gateway is a key component that connects different protocols and devices together.Achieve data acquisition, conversion and transmission. For RS485 and Modbus protocols, the Industrial IoT Gateway can perform the following functions:

1. Protocol conversion: Industrial IoT Gateway can receive data from Modbus slave devices.Convert it to other protocols (such as MQTT, HTTP, etc.) to adapt to different network and application requirements.

2. Data aggregation: Industrial IoT Gateway can collect data from multiple Modbus slave devices. And gather them to a central server or cloud platform to achieve centralized management and analysis of data.

3. Remote access and control: Through the Industrial IoT Gateway, users can remotely access Modbus devices.Realize the remote monitoring and control of the equipment.

RS485 protocol and Modbus protocol are widely used in industrial Internet of Things and automation.Although they differ in function and range of applications, they are often used together to enable communication and data transfer of devices. As a bridge connecting different protocols and devices, Industrial IoT Gateway can give full play to the advantages of these two protocols. It realizes data acquisition, conversion and transmission, and provides strong support for industrial automation and intelligence.
