How an Embedded Industrial Computer Connects Serial Devices
In a manufacturing environment, anembedded industrial computerrarely operates on its own. It often needs to connect with PLCs, meters, controllers, or groups of legacy devices. Processor and memory matter in selection, but the availability of native RS-232 and RS-485 ports often has a more direct effect on whether the project can be deployed.
Start with the Device Interface
RS-232 is designed for point-to-point connections and is common on individual meters, controllers, and commissioning equipment. Before wiring, confirm the TX, RX, and GND definitions rather than relying on connector appearance alone. RS-485 is better suited to a bus connecting multiple devices. Field checks should cover the A/B lines, device addresses, termination resistors, and communication distance.
When a device offers both RS-232 and RS-485, the practical choice depends on distance, device count, and wiring conditions. There is no need to add a conversion layer simply to obtain more interface options.
This is where native serial ports are useful. The computer provides the required electrical interface directly, removing an extra USB-to-serial adapter, serial expansion card, or external converter. Driver management, power supply, mounting, and fault isolation are then easier to manage in one system. For equipment that has been in service for many years, keeping the existing serial protocol is often more practical than replacing the entire controller.
Bringing Up a Serial Link in Four Steps
A field test can follow four steps:
Confirm the electrical standard.Distinguish RS-232, RS-485, and CAN, then verify the terminal definitions. For multi-device RS-485 connections, check the bus topology and termination. RS-232 should be wired as a point-to-point link.
Match communication parameters.Baud rate, data bits, parity, and stop bits must match the device. For RS-485, confirm station addresses as well, so that no two devices share the same address.
Test one device first.Read a known register or send a simple command. Once wiring, settings, and responses are confirmed, add devices to the bus one at a time. This separates wiring issues from protocol issues.
Connect the upper-layer system. The serial side handles collection or command delivery, while the industrial computer performs protocol conversion, buffering, processing, and data upload. For cloud access, field data such as Modbus RTU can be organized and reported through MQTT. For local operation, monitoring screens or control logic can be configured afterward.
The same approach applies to legacy equipment upgrades. Existing devices retain their RS-232 or RS-485 communications, while the added industrial computer brings field data to Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or cellular networks with fewer changes to the original control program.
Evaluate Hardware Interfaces and Software Together
The number of serial ports is only one part of the decision. It is also important to confirm whether the ports can operate at the same time, whether the software supports the required protocols, and whether the field logic can be maintained easily. For long-running equipment, the operating environment, watchdog protection, remote management, and mounting method belong on the same selection checklist.
A few PUSR options illustrate different requirements:
USR-EG528fits equipment integration projects that require multiple serial ports and edge processing. Its product page lists two RS485 ports, two RS485/RS232 ports, two 100M Ethernet ports, and two USB ports, with a DC 9-36V wide-range power input. It runs Ubuntu 24.04 and includes WukongEdge and Node-RED for data acquisition, edge computing, protocol conversion, and local SCADA/HMI. Native ports reduce the need for external conversion hardware when PLCs, meters, and controllers are connected across multiple serial links.
USR-EG118is suited to lighter projects that combine one serial port with I/O. It provides one RS485/232 port, one Ethernet port, Wi-Fi, two DO channels, one DI channel, and one AI channel, with wall-mount and DIN-rail mounting options. Arduino IDE and ESP-IDF are supported for projects that collect serial data while handling digital or analog I/O.
USR-EG828-GLis listed with RS232, RS485, CAN, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and USB3.2 interfaces, together with Linux Ubuntu, Node-RED, and Docker environments. It can be considered for equipment that combines serial communication, CAN, and edge AI. The exact interface count and configuration should be confirmed against the model-specific specification before ordering.
For one device, one serial port, and simple logic, a lightweight gateway or converter may be sufficient. Where a site has several types of serial devices and also requires protocol conversion, data processing, local visualization, or remote maintenance, anembedded industrial computerwith native RS-232 and RS-485 ports makes it easier to place hardware connections and software deployment in one solution.
