A few months ago, photos of "new industrial devices" started making the rounds online: a rugged gateway, an access point with adjustable beam-direction antennas — someone joked it looked like a drone with wings — and a couple of stackable switch-looking boxes. The gateway has since gone on sale, and the winged AP was shown at a trade show last month.
Why should you care if you run a factory, a workshop, or a repair shop? When a brand best known for office networking starts shipping fanless, wide-temperature, dust-rated gear, it's not a trend. It's the market admitting what your shop floor already knows: ordinary IT routers do not survive your environment.
Office routers aren't bad. They're just built for a room with air conditioning. Put one next to a CNC line, an oven, or a grinding station, and you'll see the same three failure modes:
Heat ages components.
Electrolytic capacitors degrade faster as temperature climbs — a rough rule of thumb is that their life halves with every 10 °C rise. Near a machine, or inside a closed control cabinet in summer, you're often 20–30 °C above "office" conditions. The router throttles, resets, and eventually just stops.
Dust kills fans.
An office router moves air through a fan; a dusty plant moves that fan full of metal and fiber dust. The dust clogs the heatsink, kills the bearing, and — because it conducts — can literally bridge pins on a PCB. "Fanless" isn't a feature; it's the difference between a device that runs for years and one you replace quarterly.
Dust also kills silently, through static.Dry dust moving across a surface generates static charge. When it discharges through an unprotected port, you get the classic "it died for no reason" failure — what the industry calls ESD damage.
Then there's power.
Welders, motors, and compressors switching on and off send surges back into the line. A router without surge and EFT protection takes those hits on the power input and on the network ports.
So before you buy anything, stop comparing prices and start measuring the environment. Here's the checklist I use.
Compare the full rated range, not just the marketing line. PUSR's USR-G816 5G router is rated from -35 °C to 75 °C; the compact USR-G806w 4G router from -20 °C to 70 °C. Now measure the worst case where you'll actually mount it — inside a metal cabinet next to a machine, in summer, cover closed. If the rating fits with margin, you're good. If not, fix the mounting spot before you fix the router.
Metal housing plus a proper heat-dissipation design, and no moving parts. In a dusty plant, "no fan" is not a downgrade — it's a requirement. The G816's metal body is exactly why it can run at 75 °C ambient without pulling dust through a heatsink.
Look for ESD protection (dust static), surge/EFT protection (welding and motor spikes), a hardware watchdog so the device reboots itself if the system hangs, and wide-voltage DC input so a sagging supply doesn't reset it. The G806w, for example, carries a hardware-plus-software watchdog plus surge, EFT, and ESD protection, and accepts power from either a terminal block or a DC socket — redundant power paths, so one dead wall-wart can't take the site down.
DIN-rail and wall mounting beat "put it on a shelf." DIN rail drops the router into the same cabinet as your PLCs — out of the way, off the dusty shelf, no cable spaghetti. The G806w supports both DIN-rail and wall mounting at roughly 104 × 102 × 28 mm, about the size of a compact switch.
If the router can be configured, rebooted, and upgraded from a desk — and can push device-offline, weak-signal, or traffic-overrun alerts by email or SMS — you stop walking the plant to find problems. You find them from the office, or from your phone.
A mid-sized plant: three production lines, PLCs and HMIs, a few IP cameras over the lines, and a control cabinet in the corner. Summer inside that cabinet: 50 °C or worse. The air: cutting dust, powder, and whatever the line throws up.
For the plant's internet backbone, use a 5G industrial router like the USR-G816. The reasons are concrete:
If the same site has more wired things to connect — cameras, switches, sensors — a multi-port edge router like the USR-G809s fits better: five gigabit ports with PoE so cameras and switches are powered without extra adapters, dual-band Wi-Fi for the office end of the plant, RS232/RS485 for older machines, and DI/DO contacts for status and alarm triggering.
The other end of the spectrum. In some ways the conditions are nastier: grinding dust, oil mist, welding surges, doors open to weather, and power that sags every time the compressor kicks in. The equipment moves around too — bays change, lifts go up, tools get rolled out.

The -20 °C to 70 °C range covers a shop with no air conditioning. Surge and EFT protection absorb the welding spikes; ESD protection handles the static that dry dust creates. One more thing worth noting: in both scenarios, the device sits where it's dusty. That's exactly why that winged AP existed — someone needed to shape coverage around machinery rather than fight metal and dust with more power. The lesson carries over: pick hardware built for the physical conditions first, and treat bandwidth, VPN, and price as the second question.

An industrial router isn't a luxury version of an office router. It's a different engineering trade-off: fanless cooling, wide temperature ratings, electrical protection, and watchdog self-healing — all so a cheap failure can't take a production line or a shop offline. The environment decides the spec. Buy for the environment, and the device quietly runs for years.
