September 10, 2026 Industrial PC vs Thin Client: Which Is Better for Industrial Automation?

In automation projects, replacing an Industrial PC with a commercial Thin Client can reduce the initial hardware cost. The real question is not whether it can display an HMI screen. It is whether it can stay connected to field devices and operate reliably in a control cabinet, on a production line, or at an unattended site. The decision comes down to two things: software requirements and site conditions.

Start with the Software: Display Only or Local Data Processing?

A Thin Client typically connects to a remote desktop or SCADA server. Its local role is mainly display, input, and a small amount of client software. Where a stable server is already in place, the terminal only opens an HMI screen, and no direct PLC, meter, or sensor connections are required, a Thin Client can be a practical fit.

The role changes once the device must collect protocols locally, clean data, apply rules, cache records, and report to the cloud. That work calls for an Embedded industrial pc that can run edge applications, not just a display terminal. The software path also separates here: Windows-based SCADA software, existing drivers, or applications limited to an x86 environment point to an x86 Industrial PC. Linux, Node-RED, Docker, protocol conversion, and edge computing can run on an ARM industrial computer.

The boundary is clear: a Thin Client leaves computing to the server, while an Industrial PC places control and data processing at the edge.

Then Look at the Site: What Lower-Cost Devices Often Leave Out

The price advantage of a commercial Thin Client often comes from a different operating environment. Several industrial requirements may not be included in a standard terminal.

First, interfaces.Automation equipment commonly communicates through RS-232, RS-485, CAN, or digital I/O. If a Thin Client lacks these interfaces, USB adapters, serial servers, or separate gateways must be added. As device numbers grow, so do drivers, power connections, wiring, and potential failure points.

Second, cooling.A fan can draw dust and moisture into the enclosure. A fanless design dissipates heat through its housing and removes one continuously moving mechanical part. For equipment running 24/7 in a control cabinet, this difference can matter more than desktop-level performance.

Third, power and environment.Industrial computers often operate with DC power, temperature changes, electromagnetic interference, and occasional software lockups. The USR-EG228, for example, uses a fanless aluminum housing, supports a DC 9-36 V input range and an operating temperature of -25°C to +75°C, and includes hardware and software watchdog protection. These features reduce the need for extra field hardware and manual restarts.

When a Thin Client Still Makes Sense

Three conditions provide a useful first check:

  • Data collection and control are fully handled by the server or PLC.
  • The terminal only runs a remote desktop, HMI client, or browser.
  • The site has stable networking, standard AC power, and convenient access for maintenance.

When these conditions are largely met, a Thin Client can be a sensible cost option. Important checks then include the remote desktop protocol, screen behavior during network loss, display interfaces, and product lifecycle.

When It Is Time to Move to an Industrial PC

Adding more peripheral devices is often less suitable than moving directly to an Industrial PC when any of the following apply:

  • The system must connect directly to two or more RS-485 ports, CAN, USB, or other field interfaces.
  • Local collection, buffering, rule processing, or interlocking must continue during a network outage.
  • The device is installed in high-temperature, dusty, vibrating, or unattended locations.
  • Wide-range DC input, watchdog protection, VPN, firewall functions, or remote management are required.
  • Existing software, drivers, or SCADA environments specifically require Windows or x86.

For Linux-based edge applications, the USR-EG528 is a suitable starting point. It uses an RK3562 quad-core Cortex-A53 processor running up to 2.0 GHz, with 2 RS-485 ports, 2 configurable RS-485/RS-232 ports, two 100 Mbps Ethernet ports, and two USB ports. Ubuntu 24.04, Node-RED, and WukongEdge are preinstalled for data collection, protocol conversion, local monitoring, and PLC programming.

Where fewer interfaces are needed but fanless operation, CAN FD, and a compact installation are important, the USR-EG228 is a better fit. It provides 2 RS-485 ports, 2 CAN FD ports, and 1 USB port, with Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and 4G connectivity options. This makes it suitable for combining collection, edge processing, and cloud reporting in one device.

Where Windows software is mandatory, selection should move to an x86 Industrial PC. PUSR EC100, EC300, and EC500 models cover configurations from lightweight applications to higher serial-port and Ethernet-port counts. EC300 and EC500 support DC 12-36 V input. The final model should be checked against the software, serial-port count, and Ethernet-port count, rather than selected by CPU name alone.

A Practical Decision Method

Break the project into four columns:local software, field interfaces, environmental conditions, and actions during network loss. If two or more columns require industrial-grade capability, a Thin Client should not be treated as an equivalent replacement for an Industrial PC. Conversely, where the local task is only to display a remote screen and there is no need for industrial interfaces, wide-temperature operation, or watchdog protection, a Thin Client remains a sound cost option.

The conclusion is not that an Industrial PC is always better. The two devices handle different work. A Thin Client is designed for display and access; an Industrial PC is designed for connection, processing, and continuous operation. When equipment begins to connect directly with PLCs, serial devices, and field power supplies, the value of an Embedded industrial pc is usually not a higher benchmark score. It is fewer add-on devices, fewer failure points, and an installation and maintenance approach suited to industrial sites.
