Choosing a cellular router for an industrial site usually comes down to a few recurring scenarios: 

① temporary networking on a construction site, where cameras, tower-crane monitoring, and the project office all need connectivity; 

② PLCs in remote cabinets sending data back with no one on site; 

③ CCTV systems uploading multiple live video streams; 

④ distributed equipment spread across stations that need unified remote maintenance. The priorities differ sharply between these scenarios. 

What follows is a concrete method organized by scenario, with models from PUSR's product line mapped to each one.

Three Calculations Before Choosing a Cellular Router

Calculation one: data volume.Video streams and PLC data collection sit at completely different scales. A single 1080P camera is typically estimated at 4 Mbps — 16 concurrent channels add up to 64 Mbps of upstream traffic. Cat 4 4G offers a theoretical 50 Mbps uplink, but real deployments rarely reach half of that, which falls short of this requirement. PLC point data often totals less than a few hundred KB per day — 4G handles that comfortably.

Calculation two: environmental conditions.An outdoor cabinet in direct sunlight can exceed 60°C inside; vehicle installations face constant vibration; site power swings high and low. Working temperature range, power supply range, and EMC protection determine whether the equipment stays stable until the project ends.

Calculation three: who maintains it.Once unattended sites multiply, dispatching technicians becomes impractical. The equipment needs to support a remote management platform and VPN networking, so configuration, upgrades, and troubleshooting all happen remotely.

Scenario 1: Construction Sites — Bandwidth First

Site networks are temporary, and pulling fiber rarely pays off, so a SIM-based cellular router that works out of the box is the standard approach. Multiple camera streams, plus project-office traffic and video conferencing, can strain 4G bandwidth; a 5G model carries the load with room to spare.

Five specifications deserve close scrutiny: SA/NSA dual-mode 5G, gigabit Ethernet ports, dual-band WiFi, wide temperature and voltage ranges, and a hardware watchdog. The USR-G816 is a good reference point: a Qualcomm quad-core processor with a 1.9 Gbps theoretical 5G downlink; three gigabit LAN ports plus one gigabit WAN/LAN; dual-band WiFi covering the project office; built-in RS232/485 serial ports that take in on-site serial devices along the way; a -35°C to 75°C operating range in a metal housing; and dual-SIM redundancy that switches to the backup card automatically when the primary loses service. On a bandwidth-hungry site with a mixed bag of devices, one unit can take on the whole job.

Scenario 2: Remote Cabinets and PLCs — Stability First

PLC data collection means small data volumes, 24/7 operation, and no one on site. Bandwidth requirements are modest; long-term reliability requirements are not:

  • At unattended stations, software/hardware dual watchdogs and automatic reconnection after a dropped link are hard requirements;
  • For PLC connectivity, Ethernet-equipped PLCs connect to the router's LAN port, and VPN networking allows remote program upgrades and remote fault diagnosis. For older devices that speak serial, a model with RS485/RS232 ports saves a separate DTU;
  • Where 4G is enough, 5G adds nothing — the saved budget goes to data plans and spare units.

The USR-G806w fits here: both the WiFi chip and the 4G module are Qualcomm solutions; software and hardware dual watchdogs; one WAN/LAN plus two LAN fast Ethernet ports; enhanced WiFi with two FEM chips and dual 5 dBi antennas, reaching several hundred meters of coverage in open environments; a 104×102×28 mm body that mounts on a DIN rail or a wall; and a meaningfully lower price than 5G models.

Scenario 3: CCTV Backhaul and Distributed Equipment — Interfaces First

As camera counts climb and devices diversify, the question shifts from "can it get online" to "are there enough ports". Three things matter:

  • Port count and speed: at sites with more than eight cameras, gigabit is the floor, and a fiber port is worth reserving for long-distance endpoints;
  • Uplink rate: surveillance backhaul consumes upstream bandwidth — judging by downlink figures alone leads to wrong conclusions;
  • Maintenance scale: across dozens of distributed sites, batch configuration and offline alerts (email, SMS push) from a remote management platform save a great deal of inspection work. Where edge computing is needed, a model that supports Python secondary development preprocesses data locally before uploading it, which brings data plan costs down.

Sites with complex interface requirements can look at the USR-G809s: two gigabit fiber ports plus eight gigabit Ethernet ports; a cellular module selectable among 5G / 5G RedCap / 4G; dual serial ports, dual-SIM redundancy, GNSS positioning, and WiFi 6; Python secondary development supported. A Final Check Before Installation

① Operating temperature: verify against on-site extremes — a commercial 0–40°C range falls short inside an outdoor cabinet; 

② Power supply range: 9–36 V DC or wider, with reverse-polarity protection and surge suppression; ③ Protection: metal housing and EMC ratings; for vehicle and field installations, check vibration specifications as well; 

④ Interface headroom: leave one spare of each — Ethernet, serial, WiFi — since adding devices mid-project is routine; 

⑤ VPN and remote management: protocols like OpenVPN, IPSec, and L2TP, plus cloud-based batch maintenance, are the prerequisites for unattended operation.

The Short Version

The selection order is fixed: calculate data volume first, assess environmental conditions second, settle the maintenance model third, then verify parameters against the checklist. When bandwidth falls short, step up to a 5G model; with small data volumes, choose a stable 4G solution; where devices are many and interfaces varied, a gigabit edge router is the answer. Three steps done, the field of industrial-grade cellular routers narrows naturally to two or three candidates
