2G, the second generation of mobile phone communication technology specifications, with digital voice transmission technology as the core. The user experience rate is 10kbps and the peak rate is 100kbps. It is generally defined as the technical specification of mobile phone communication that can not directly transmit information such as e-mail, software, etc.; only has calls and some transmission such as time and date. However, SMS can be implemented in some of its specifications. It is commonly known in the United States as Personal Communications Service (PCS).ac

Technical standards

The 2G technology can be basically divided into two types, one is developed based on TDMA and represented by GSM, and the other is the CDMA specification in the form of Multiplexing. The main specifications of the second generation mobile phone communication technology are: GSN processor GSM: based on the development of TDMA, originated in Europe, has been globalized. IDEN: a system developed based on TDMA and unique to the United States.Used by Nextell, an American telecommunications system provider. IS-136 (also known as D-AMPS): Based on TDMA, it is the simplest TDMA system in the United States and is used in the Americas. IS-95 (also known as cdmaOne): Based on the development of CDMA, it is the simplest CDMA system in the United States and is used in some countries in the Americas and Asia.PDC (Personal Digital Cellular): developed based on TDMA, only popular in Japan.

Difference between 2G and 3G

3G is the abbreviation of 3rd Generation, which refers to the third generation mobile communication technology. Compared with the first generation analog mobile phone (1G) and the second generation GSM, CDMA and other digital mobile phones (2G), the third generation mobile phone generally refers to a new generation of mobile communication system that combines wireless communication with multimedia communication such as the Internet. It can process images, music, video streaming and other media forms, and provide a variety of information services including web browsing, teleconferencing, e-commerce and so on.

In order to provide this service, the wireless network must be able to support different data transmission speeds, that is, transmission speeds of at least 2 Mbps (megabits per second), 384 kbps (kilobits per second), and 144 kbps (kilobit per second) in indoor, outdoor, and driving environments, respectively.

2G (second generation) stands for the second generation mobile communication technology. Represented as GSM. Digital voice transmission technology is the core.

Britain is eliminated

On December 8, 2021, the British government said it would phase out 2G and 3G services by 2033 in order to give way to 5G and 6G services. Setting a date for the end of 2G and 3G services will help new device makers enter the market, the government said. At the same time, the British government will allocate another 50 million pounds for the research and development of telecommunications technology.

China's development

In August 2023, some users complained that Guangdong Telecom closed its 2G base station and turned its mobile phone into a "brick", which quickly triggered a heated debate on the Internet. On August 28, Guangdong Telecom said that it is currently carrying out network upgrade work throughout the province. After 2G network mobile phone card users upgrade the network, the original number can continue to be used. Users can choose 4G or 5G packages with more favorable traffic and voice unit price, or they can choose to retain the original package to continue to use, such as some products can not continue to use. Guangdong Telecom will also provide an undertaking plan.

In December 2023, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology responded to the issues related to the withdrawal of 2G/3G networks concerned by users on the People's Network Leadership Message Board. According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, 2G/3G withdrawal is an inevitable choice for the upgrading of mobile communication networks, and is also the main international practice. However, the withdrawal of mobile communication network is not simply a "retreat". It is necessary to improve user protection measures and fully protect the rights and interests of users in order to implement withdrawal from the network.

2G network withdrawal can use limited frequency resources and network resources in the development of 5G and 4G mobile communication networks, which is conducive to reducing the overall cost of network operation and improving the efficiency of network operation in China. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will plan as a whole and advance reasonably, and at the same time require mobile communication enterprises to plan early and inform early, so as to create conditions for users to "be willing to retreat" and "be willing to retreat".
