August 31, 2026 Can a Fanless Industrial Computer Really Survive in a Summer Control Cabinet?

Will a fanless industrial computer actually hold up inside a control cabinet in the heat of summer? Should the build be ARM or x86? And once the unit arrives, will it connect straight to the PLCs and sensors already on the floor?

These questions come up for good reason. An industrial site is not an office. Dust, vibration, voltage fluctuation and 24/7 operation are the norm. If selection focuses only on the CPU model and memory size, the result is often a machine whose spec sheet looks great but whose fit with the actual application is wrong. These five questions help match a need to the right machine.

1. What the site actually needs decides ARM vs. x86

For sensor data collection, protocol conversion or lightweight IoT workloads, an ARM-based, low-power unit fits better. The EG228 and EG528 are both fanless designs — low heat, low noise — well suited to tight control cabinets. The EG528 also carries 3C, CE, ROHS and WEEE certification, so it can go straight into domestic projects and export applications.

For SCADA, Ignition, Windows-based supervisory software, or heavy video processing and edge AI inference, the computing headroom of x86 comes into play. PUSR's EC300 and EC500 series take this route and suit high-performance computing scenarios.

2. Fan or no fan depends on the environment, not on noise

A fanless industrial computer is not about making the workshop quieter. It is about avoiding faults caused by dust building up on fans and aging bearings. In dusty sites with wide temperature swings, fanless is the baseline. But if the unit has to sit in a poorly ventilated hot corner, the operating temperature range and heat dissipation design matter just as much as the absence of a fan.

3. Can the interfaces talk to the equipment already in place?

The most common time-waster is not a lack of computing power but discovering, after delivery, that the interfaces and protocols do not line up. Before choosing, list the interfaces of existing equipment — RS485/RS232 port counts, DI/DO points, Ethernet ports, CAN bus, 4G/5G connectivity needs — then find the matching model. The EG628 covers a wide set of interfaces and handles PLC Runtime, SCADA and protocol gateway roles; the EG828-EMS leans toward energy management gateway duty; for edge AI inference, the EG928A is the one to look at, certified with 3C, CE, FCC, ROHS and WEEE.

4. Software ecosystem matters more than hardware specs

A trap many engineers hit: the hardware arrives, and the operating system or runtime will not go on. PUSR's lineup spans Linux, Ubuntu and Windows directions. If the project containers its apps with Docker, or prototypes quickly with Node-RED, confirm model support before ordering. An open-source IoT gateway like the EG118 suits fast validation and small-batch deployments.

5. Certification is the ticket in, not a bonus

Industrial sites demand stability, and certification is not decoration — it is the entry ticket. Exports to Europe look for CE/ROHS/WEEE; domestic projects often require 3C; a cybersecurity certificate adds extra assurance. The EG628 carries a broad certification set — RCM, 3C, ANATEL, CE, FCC, MTC, NBTC, ROHS, WEEE and cybersecurity — a fit for compliance-heavy projects. For HMI jobs that need a touchscreen, the SH800 is worth a look, holding 3C, CE, ROHS and WEEE.

Where selection lands

The worst part of industrial PC selection is a specs race. The question is not how high the machine scores in benchmarks, but whether this model can keep running on this site for three years without trouble. Getting scenario, interfaces, software, environment and certification right beats staring at a configuration sheet.
