September 21, 2023 Differences between enterprise, home, and industrial routers

Industrial router is a kind of communication intermediary equipment that provides data transmission function for users by using wired and wireless networks.At present, it has been widely used in the industrial Internet of Things industry. So as an important part of the construction of the Internet of Things, what are the advantages of Industrial router?How is it different from a home router? Let's get to know each other.

1, Difference between enterprise, industrial and home routers

Enterprise-, industrial-, and home-grade routers differ in the following areas:

1.1 Enterprise-class routers are designed to meet the high performance and high availability needs of large enterprises or organizations.

Provide stable network connection and complex network management functions.Industrial routers are mainly oriented to industrial environments, such as factories, logistics, mining, etc., with anti-interference, high temperature resistance, anti-dust and other characteristics.To meet the network communication requirements in harsh industrial environments.Home grade routers, on the other hand, are designed to meet the common network needs of a home or small office.

1.2 Performance and throughput:

Enterprise- and industrial-grade routers typically have higher processing power and throughput,And can support more simultaneously connected devices.This is in response to the need for large numbers of devices to be connected at the same time and large traffic flows in enterprise and industrial networks.In contrast, the performance and throughput of home-grade routers are relatively low.

1.3 Network management features:

Enterprise-class and industrial-class routers have more complex and advanced network management features.For example, they can support VLANs, QoS, VPNs,For finer network partitioning, traffic control, and remote access.Home-grade routers, on the other hand, typically provide simple network management functions and focus on basic network connectivity and security settings.

1.4 Reliability and stability:

As enterprise-class and industrial-class routers are used in business-critical and industrial applications,They usually have higher reliability and stability requirements.This includes fail-safe, redundant backup, thermal control, and more to ensure continuous and reliable network connectivity.In contrast, home-grade routers typically require only basic reliability and stability because they are used in simpler environments.

It should be noted that the above distinctions are neither absolute nor mutually exclusive.Some routers may have multiple levels of features, and it is important to choose the appropriate router level for your specific needs.

2. Difference between industrial and home routers

2.1 Differences in positioning

Home router: a home router is a distributor for Internet access at home.Home routers can forward broadband network signals to nearby wireless network devices through antennas.For example, mobile phones, tablets, laptops and so on with wifi function.

Industrial router: Industrial router is a kind of wireless data transmission function provided for users by using public wireless network.It is mainly used in smart grid, intelligent transportation, environmental protection monitoring, fire monitoring, security monitoring, water conservancy monitoring and public safety.Advertising, oil field monitoring, coal mine monitoring, earthquake monitoring, meteorological monitoring, heating network monitoring, centralized meter reading and other industries.

2.2 Differences in product functionality

Home routers only provide Internet access.

As the industrial wireless router is applied to the industrial control industry, it needs more powerful functions. It not only needs large bandwidth and fast response,It also needs port mapping, VPN, watchdog, stronger firewall protection, electrostatic protection and other functions.

① Difference in performance

Home routers usually use the amount of tape to reflect its fixed performance.The bandwidth is the number of terminals that the router can stably connect at the same time.Generally, the maximum number of home routers is about 15, and more can not guarantee that each terminal can use the network normally.

Industrial routers generally use forwarding performance to reflect fixed performance, usually above 2Mpps.At the same time, it also has a variety of routing boards, which can take hundreds of terminals and connect many networks with different protocols.So that terminals between each of the different protocol networks can access each other unimpeded.

② Differences in security

Because home router support fewer protocol,Generally, it does not support the functions of internal/external attack defense, preventing the intrusion of viruses, Trojans and hackers, and there is no guarantee of security.

Because Industrial router is often applied to different industrial control sites, more routing protocols are needed.Such as SNMP, policy, unified management protocol, etc., to ensure the safe operation of the network, while ensuring that user information is not stolen.

③ Differences in environmental use requirements

The working range of the home router is -10 ~ 60 ℃, which is usually satisfied by the indoor temperature.However, it can not be applied to the field of industrial control environment with harsh environment.

Due to the difference in components and design, the normal operating temperature of Industrial router can reach -35 ℃ to 75 ℃.

④ Difference in stability

Under normal circumstances, the home router is not able to work for a long time, if the home router is not powered off for a long time.There will be frequent network disconnection, signal instability and so on.

Industrial Router's high stability is not found in ordinary home routers, and it works 24 hours a day throughout the year.When the network fails, the backup link can be switched or the equipment can be restarted to make the network self-recover.

What are the advantages of the industrial grade router?

1. Industrial metal shell, durable and reliable quality;

2. The protection grade of the system is IP30, which is suitable for the working environment with wide temperature span of -35-75 ℃;

3. High-performance 5G antenna, with stronger through-wall capability and wider WIFI coverage;

4. With perfect TCP/IP protocol stack, it can meet the communication requirements under different network links;

5. Complete security strategy, with strong flexibility and security.
