For industrial IoT projects, once the device count reaches triple digits, procurement stops being the main concern. What actually consumes time and manpower is what comes after deployment: how to push configurations at scale, how to upgrade firmware, how to know the moment a device goes offline. Logging into the web UI one device at a time works for dozens of units; with a hundred-plus, it stops being practical.
A warehouse project is a good example. The building is metal-framed, with no fixed-line internet, so the only option is a cellular router on 4G/5G. The SIM cards use static IPs, and headquarters needs a site-to-site VPN connecting the warehouse to the production systems. Since the metal structure almost completely blocks the signal, the router has to be mounted outdoors. The setup itself is straightforward — the trouble starts after the devices arrive. They are not covered by any unified management system, VPN parameters have to be configured manually one by one, and remote access comes with a per-device cloud subscription that adds up to a significant annual cost.
This is common in large-scale deployments. Specs and selection matter, but only as a starting point. What dozens or hundreds of devices really need is platform-level centralized management, not device-by-device operations.
For batch-deployed cellular routers, three things are worth checking:
① Can configuration be done remotely?
The typical scenario: 100 devices across 10 sites, all sharing the same parameter set. If every unit needs a laptop plugged in on site, the workload multiplies tenfold. With remote access to the device's built-in web page through a management platform, parameter changes and reboots are done from a distance; the field team only handles physical installation and inserting the SIM.
② Can firmware be upgraded remotely?
Walking each site to upgrade firmware is not realistic. With remote firmware upgrade, the change is pushed from the management side in one click — start the upgrade before leaving the office, and the next morning every site is already running the new version.
③ Can failures trigger alerts automatically?
Device offline, weak signal, data usage over the limit — these should not wait for someone on site to report. The platform detects anomalies in real time and pushes alerts via email and SMS, with repeated pushes so nothing gets buried.
