September 7, 2026 Industrial Cellular Router Evaluation Checklist: 20 Things to Test Before Buying

Industrial 4G/5G cellular router evaluations tend to follow the same script: the datasheet says "industrial-grade," and three months after deployment the cabinet on the shop floor keeps dropping. Most of those problems surface during PoC, provided the right items actually get tested.

A common theme in IT-manager discussions around small industrial networks runs like this: a few production lines, a handful of cabinets, a dozen cameras or PLCs with no fiber run, and 4G/5G standing in as the primary uplink. The budget is tighter than at a full plant, but the uptime bar is not. The twenty items below belong in the PoC pass before a single device ships to site.

PoC is also the cheapest place to fail a device. A week-long bench test costs a few engineer-hours; the same defect, once it takes a production line down for a day, costs orders of magnitude more. The list that follows groups the checks into four buckets — environment and hardware, network and carrier, interfaces and expansion, and security and management — so that each can be handed to a different reviewer if needed.

I. Environment and Hardware (5 items)

  1. Wide temperature.Metal enclosure, operating range -35°C to +75°C. Summer sun can push an outdoor cabinet past 60°C internally, so a commercial 0–40°C rating fails in the first heat wave. Cold-start tests in a freezer chamber catch the failures that lab benches never see.
  1. Wide voltage.9–36V DC minimum with reverse-polarity protection. Site power tends to swing, especially on construction or temporary sites. Brown-out and over-voltage tests, including the worst case seen in the plant, are worth running for at least one full duty cycle.
  1. EMC and surge.ESD, transient pulse, surge rated at level 3 or above. VFDs, welders, and large motors in the plant generate real interference. PoC should run with a real motor or welder nearby, not just inside an EMC chamber.
  1. Dual watchdog.Hardware plus software watchdog with auto-reconnect. A device that loses responsiveness must recover itself. The test is simple: kill the cellular process or freeze the web UI, and verify the recovery time matches the documented interval.
  1. Mounting.Both DIN 35mm rail and wall brackets. Cabinets and tray runs call for different mounting, and the router often needs both. Confirm the bracket holes line up with the cabinet layout before ordering in volume.

II. Network and Carrier (5 items)

  1. Dual-SIM auto failover.Primary card switches to backup when signal weakens or drops. Using two different carriers is recommended, and the failover itself gets exercised during PoC. Pull the primary antenna, time the switchover, and confirm traffic resumes without manual intervention.
  1. Weak signal and outage alarms.Real-time push via email and SMS. Thresholds should be configurable, otherwise the on-call engineer never sees them. Verify the alarm fires at a realistic RSSI value, not only at total signal loss.
  1. APN compatibility.Confirm the APN works with the target carrier (Vodafone, AT&T, China Telecom, China Unicom, Telefónica, and others). "Global bands" on the datasheet is not the same as actual registration. SIMs from each target carrier should be tested in the candidate unit, in the target country, before any volume order.
  1. Real-carrier testing.Bandwidth, latency, and jitter need to be measured on the actual carrier at the actual deployment site. Lab results drift noticeably from field conditions, especially in indoor cabinets, metal-shielded rooms, and basements.
  1. VPN protocol set.IPSec, OpenVPN, WireGuard, GRE, PPTP, L2TP — pick according to the headquarters gateway requirement. Running multiple tunnels concurrently is a safer bet. Throughput under encryption matters; a router that drops to 30% of line rate under IPSec may not fit a video application.

III. Interfaces and Expansion (4 items)

  1. Ethernet count and speed.Gigabit or fast Ethernet, number of LAN ports, and whether the WAN/LAN can be reassigned. The upstream switch has to match. If the cabinet has five endpoints and the router exposes four LAN ports, the answer is not "buy a bigger switch later."
  1. Serial port.RS232 or RS485 at minimum, for connecting PLCs, meters, and acquisition devices. Serial-to-Modbus stability also gets tested at PoC. Long runs and noisy environments expose different bugs than a 1-meter lab cable.
  1. WiFi coverage.Dual-band preferred. FEM chips plus high-gain antennas (5 dBi and up) reach a few hundred meters in open areas. In-building penetration is a separate calculation; a site survey, or at least a walk-test with a known client, is the minimum.
  1. GNSS positioning.For mobile assets (vehicles, AGVs, containers), confirm the GNSS module is integrated and the accuracy meets dispatch requirements. Cold-start time-to-first-fix and urban-canyon accuracy drift are both worth recording.

IV. Security and Management (6 items)

  1. Cloud-based batch management.Batch configuration push, status overview, remote reboot from the cloud. Multiple sites make it a hard requirement. The dashboard should expose uptime, signal strength, traffic, and firmware version at a glance.
  1. Offline and traffic alarms.Offline device, traffic overrun, SIM anomaly — all need alarms, through at least two channels (email plus SMS). Alert deduplication matters: a router that flaps should not flood the on-call phone at 3 a.m.
  1. Remote firmware upgrade.Batch OTA, scheduled night-time upgrade, and rollback on failure. Verify the rollback actually works by pushing a known-bad image and confirming the device returns to the previous build without a site visit.
  1. Firewall.SPI, ACL, port filtering. NAT alone is not enough. A simple port-scan from an external host should reveal a closed-by-default posture, not a wide-open one.
  1. Encryption grade.Whether OpenVPN or IPSec uses AES-256 or AES-128. Finance-grade deployments typically require the former. Confirm the cipher suite can be pinned; a router that silently negotiates to a weaker cipher is a common compliance gap.
  1. Third-party security certification.EU EN 18031, RED, FCC, UL, and others. Export-bound projects or compliance-driven customers need the certificates up front. The certificate document and the test report behind it are not always the same thing; ask for both.

Two Typical Deployments

Sites with heavy uplink demand — many cameras, video backhaul, guaranteed upstream — fit the USR-G816: 5G SA/NSA dual mode, Qualcomm quad-core with X62 modem, three gigabit LAN plus one gigabit WAN/LAN, dual-band WiFi, 9–36V wide voltage, -35°C to +75°C wide temperature, dual-SIM auto failover, industrial EMC protection and hardware watchdog, plus an RS232/485 serial port for PLC integration. The unit covers the main uplink and the wide-temperature requirement at the same time, which matters for outdoor cabinets in summer.

Sites with tighter budgets, distributed points, light per-site data volume (PLC status, a few cameras), and a strong WiFi coverage need can look at the USR-G806w: Qualcomm-based design with two FEM chips and dual 5 dBi antennas, WiFi up to 300 Mbps, one WAN plus two LAN (switchable), -20°C to +70°C operating temperature, and both DIN-rail and wall mounting supported. The strengthened WiFi cuts the need for a separate access point on small sites, which is the actual cost-saving point of this hardware combination.

Closing

Running all twenty items during PoC saves more time than fixing them one by one after deployment. Each item has a measurable pass/fail line — pass and the device moves to pilot, fail and a different model or vendor gets a turn. The shortcomings show up before they reach the field.

Worth spending a few hours measuring real cellular router behavior at selection, rather than reading the spec sheet.
