August 28, 2026 Mini PC vs Industrial PC: More Than Just the Case

Someone spent a year teaching themselves CAD, working with an overseas machine shop, and turning an aluminum mini case from drawings into a finished product—all to fit a low-profile GPU and a 500W power supply. Tolerances, quality control, packaging, logistics: every step was refined again and again. That kind of dedication is common among small-form-factor enthusiasts, who chase the extremes of size, cooling, and looks.

Put the same "small computer" into a factory cabinet, and the criteria flip. Nobody cares whether the case is CNC-machined aluminum or whether a GPU fits inside. On site, people care about three things: whether it can survive years inside the cabinet, whether it has the right interfaces, and whether it passes the certifications the project requires. That is exactly where a Mini PC and an industrial computer part ways.

1. First, where is it expected to live?

Consumer mini PCs are typically rated up to 35–40°C and rely on a small fan for cooling. In an un-air-conditioned cabinet in summer, internal temperatures easily exceed that. Fan dust buildup, throttling, reboots—a familiar sequence. Industrial computers are designed to survive inside a cabinet: fanless, with the aluminum housing acting as the heatsink, and no moving parts to fail. PUSR's EG928A, for example, is rated for -25°C to 75°C, covering everything from outdoor cabinets in northern winters to electrical cabinets in southern summers. The "operating temperature" line is the fastest veto in any selection process.

2. Then, what powers it?

On a desk there is a clean wall outlet; a mini PC with a 12V or 19V adapter is done. On site, that is rarely available—a cabinet usually has a 24V DC bus, and the voltage dips every time a motor starts. Industrial computers are designed for this kind of power: wide-range DC input. The x86 EC300 and EC500 are rated DC 12–36V and can be connected straight to the bus. The "indoor use only" note on an adapter is the gap between the two design philosophies.

3. Finally, count the interfaces

A desktop computer's ports—HDMI, USB—are for a monitor and a keyboard. An industrial computer's ports are for machines: RS485, RS232, CAN, and digital I/O. The EG628 packs 2×RS485, 1×RS232, 1×CAN, and dual Ethernet into one box, ships with Ubuntu, and supports Node-RED and Docker. It sits among PLCs, meters, and sensors, doing protocol conversion and data collection all day. If a selection process starts drifting toward "just buy a USB-to-serial cable," the direction is probably wrong.

4. Two invisible considerations

First, what happens when it fails. Industrial sites run 7×24 unattended; when a device hangs, nobody walks over to press restart. That is why industrial computers treat self-recovery mechanisms such as the watchdog as basic design. Second, certifications. CE, FCC, 3C, and ROHS are the tickets into a project—the EG628's certification list even includes cybersecurity. What integrators fear most is not lackluster performance but a device that cannot pass local certification and never makes it on site.

How to decide which type to buy

Match the scenario:

  • On a desk or at a storefront, eight hours a day, with someone nearby—a Mini PC is enough, and cheaper.
  • Inside a cabinet, running 7×24 unattended, talking to field equipment—that calls for an industrial computer.
  • Need local AI as well, such as defect detection or license plate recognition—go with an NPU-equipped model. The EG928A offers 6 TOPS of compute, supports mainstream frameworks like TensorFlow and ONNX, and connects up to 32 network cameras.

The selection method comes down to three steps: decide the scenario first, then check operating temperature and power input range, and finally verify interfaces and certifications. Get the order right, and the right model tends to surface on its own.

Back to the case at the beginning. Spending a year perfecting a chassis is the fun of small-form-factor enthusiasts; people running projects put their attention on whether a machine is still online years later. The case is only the most visible difference—the real gap is in the spec
