What is Ethernet to serial converter and how does it work

Ethernet to serial converter is a communication device that converts data between RS232/485/422 and TCP/IP communication.

What is a communication device?

Like the paper cup microphone played in childhood, it is the simplest communication environment. Nowadays, in the era of electronic development, networking equipment is added to the communication equipment at both ends, which is the function of monitoring the transmission of data from terminal equipment to remote cloud, and ultimately achieves the social value of saving labor costs and reducing costs and increasing efficiency.

Ethernet to serial converter is such a communication device, which provides serial port to network function and is a serial RS232/485/422 transmission network solution. How does Ethernet to serial converter realize communication networking at both ends?

How to connect and use Ethernet to serial converter

1. Prepare a serial device server, such as one of the following.

USR-TCP232-302、USR-TCP232-304、USR-TCP232-306、USR-TCP232-410S、USR-N510、USR-N520、USR-N540、USR-N520、USR-N668。

2. Connect to the serial device server:

Connect the serial port of the Ethernet to serial converter to the interface of the device, and then connect the RJ45 interface of the Ethernet to serial converter to the router or computer. Then power on the Ethernet to serial converter.

3. Configure serial device server parameters:

Configure the parameters of the Ethernet to serial converter through the WEB page, open the ie browser, enter the IP address of the Ethernet to serial converter to access, enter the account and password on the login page, and enter the configuration page. Select the configuration item in the corresponding menu to configure the parameters.When modifying the parameters through the Web page, the Ethernet to serial converter and the computer must be on the same subnet. The parameters of serial port mainly include: baud rate, data bit, stop bit and check bit.

4. Configure the network parameters of the Ethernet to serial converter. The working modes of the Ethernet to serial converter include TCP server mode, TCP client mode, and UDP mode. This parameter is configured for a successful connection between the computer and the Ethernet to serial converter.

● TCP server mode means that the Ethernet to serial converter monitors the set port and waits for the TCP client to connect. That is, the computer initiates a TCP connection to the Ethernet to serial converter.

● The TCP client mode means that the Ethernet to serial converter initiates a TCP connection with the destination IP address configured by the user. In the TCP client mode, the Ethernet to serial converter establishes a TCP connection with the computer.

● UDP mode means that the Ethernet to serial converter transmits the serial port data from the serial port device to the target network device through the UDP connection. The Ethernet to serial converter will listen on the port and transmit all received data to the serial device.

How does the Ethernet to serial converter work

1. TCP Sever mode: Ethernet to serial converter is used as a TCP server, and the conversion platform program listens to the connection requests on the specified TCP port. This mode is more suitable for one conversion program to establish connections with multiple platforms (one conversion program cannot establish connections with multiple platform programs).

2. TCP Client mode: Ethernet to serial converter as a TCP client, the converter active program requests to connect to the network on the power supply, which is more suitable for multiple converters to connect to a platform program at the same time.

Communication mode of Ethernet to serial converter

1. Point-to-point communication mode: In this mode, the converters are paired, one as a server and the other as a client, and a connection is established between the two to transmit data transparently in both directions. This mode applies to a bus connection between two serial devices designed as a TCP/IP network connection.

2. Use virtual serial communication mode: In this mode, one or more converters are connected to a computer to transmit data transparently in both directions. Through the virtual serial port software management of the converter on the computer, one virtual serial port can correspond to a plurality of converters.N corresponds to M virtual serial converter (N < = M). This mode is applicable to serial devices controlled by computer RS485 or RS232.

3. Communication mode based on web: In this mode, the communication program based on SOCKET protocol on the application PC can choose to support SOCKET protocol directly in the converter settings.

4. Ethernet to serial converter is mainly used in access control system, attendance system, dining system, POS system, building automation system, self-service banking system, telecommunication room monitoring, power monitoring, etc.

Industrial Weighing Application of Serial to Ethernet Server

1. The system administrator sends the RF card to the driver, on which the car number and other contents have been entered, and the driver can paste the card on the front windshield of the car.

2. When the vehicle is a few meters away from the weighing platform, the card reader detects the RF card information on the vehicle and uploads it to the background through the Ethernet to serial converter with personal networking, and the background automatically records the vehicle information.

3. When the background system judges that there is no vehicle weighing on the weighing platform, it sends a control command to the Langhand relay controller to control the opening of the import barrier machine to allow the vehicle to pass and drive on the weighing platform;

4. The relay controller detects that the front and rear infrared positioning sensors are not blocked, indicating that the vehicle is parked in the weighing effective area of the weighbridge, and the relay controller actively reports the status to the background.

5. After the vehicle stops steadily, the background system sends the Ethernet to serial converter a command to read the weighbridge data, and saves the returned weight value.

6. After the weighing is completed, the background system sends a control command to the relay control board to lift the exit barrier machine and allow the vehicle to drive out of the weighing platform;

7. A weighing list printer is placed at the exit, the background sends a printing list command to the Ethernet to serial converter, and the driver can leave after tearing off the printed weighing list.
