April 24, 2020 How to choose the wireless module in the industrial IOT?

Key issues in choosing IOT transmission:

1. How to deal with customers and configuration?

2. How to ensure transmission security?

3. What are the pain points related to access point technology?

WiFi module

WiFi is based entirely on TCP/IP protocol, and any host supporting WiFi is part of the local area network (LAN) which it connects to. This may cause security problems, because IT departments may not be able to protect and manage WiFi endpoints that connected to IOS as they do with Windows laptops.

Ideal industrial WIFI use cases

•Barcode scanners in factories

•Connecting machines

Advantages

•Almost ubiquitous enterprise network coverage

•Cheap chipsets and WiFi modules

•If the application and polling rate are well designed, they can be efficient

Bluetooth modules

Because Bluetooth is the lowest cost wireless technology on the market, there is no cost, only module cost, a low power consumption Bluetooth module is less than 20 RMB. Bluetooth is a short-range technology.

Ideal Bluetooth Use Case

•Lighting control

•Distance display

Advantage

•Low cost: Disposable or competitive product line.

•Long battery life

Cellular network (M2M)

Using cellular networks to connect industrial Internet of Things devices is a good choice for many companies. The lowest price we've seen for 750kB data per month is less than 5 yuan per device. If it doesn't fit your business model, it may be very expensive.
Cellular terminal equipment cost is an important factor that need to consider
Chip authentication is a confusing and frustrating area. A new mobile terminal chip will cost nearly millions of yuan to authenticate and test into the market. Even module-based design costs $20,000 or more.
Another issue to consider is that cellular devices (currently available protocols) require considerable power to maintain network connections. This is one of the main reasons why 3GPP is committed to improve cellular standards of the Internet of Things (chip cost is another reason).

Ideal cellular M2M Use Case

•GPS Remote Information Processing Tracker

•Intelligent meters

•Internet of vehicles

Advantage

•Ubiquitous network coverage

Sigfox/LoRaWAN module

LPWAN is only applicable to solutions in specific geographic areas. Companies that want to deploy Internet of Things solutions quickly in different locations may have to wait for the increasing of network coverage and a wait for operators to build their base stations. These networks also need to do some work to simplify equipment supply and identity. Without a SIM card concept, each endpoint and unique ID number need to be set up specifically.

Ideal use case

•Automatic meter reading

•GPS tracking equipment (in designated areas)

Advantage

•Effective power

•Cheap chips

•Low certification cost

In short, Bluetooth, cellular and LoraWAN have their advantages and disadvantages. Before choosing wireless technology, if you can understand and identify potential problems related to configuration, security, cost, and the overview above, you can make the best choice for your scenario.
