April 23, 2020 The Application of Serial to Ethernet Converter in IoT

If your serial device, such as RS232, RS485 or RS422, needs to be connected to a node on the TCP/IP network, you will need a serial to Ethernet converter, which is also called serial device server. By converting serial devices into wired networks, the serial device server can solve the data transmission and conversion between serial ports and Ethernet ports. You can access serial devices through Ethernet on PC or industrial personal computer to achieve remote monitoring, operation, problem diagnosis and troubleshooting.

According to the survey of the industrial development level of China's authoritative institutions, more than 85% of the equipment in the industrial field is still traditional equipment. These equipment are in remote locations and are not yet linked to the Internet of Things. Moreover, most of these old equipment are serial ports. According to the report data collected by various institutions in the country, they play an important role in our national production. As we all know, the more devices connected to the Internet of Things, the larger the amount of data acquired, and the more accurate the results of big data calculations.

In the pursuit of omni-directional connectivity, several problems have arisen. One lasting problem: Is there still serial to Ethernet in the Industrial Internet of Things? For many practical reasons, the answer is definitely yes. Device lifetime, serial to Ethernet communication simplicity, and cost considerations are driving serial to Ethernet in the IoT. This article outlines these three factors and emphasizes the relevance of serial to Ethernet connections in the industrial Internet of Things. Serial to Ethernet converters are born to connect these old devices to a new network.

For many companies, serial device servers and Ethernet modules are a relatively low-cost option,  compared to wireless networks, 20% of network costs can be saved.

From the perspective of SCADA operations, a further consideration is the cost of the IP address. In a SCADA system, the number of IP addresses will affect the cost. Most small- and medium-sized enterprises typically choose a 1,000-point IP address package to keep costs under control. Although the pure Ethernet architecture is required to provide a separate IP address for each connected device, another advantage of the serial to Ethernet architecture is that it combines multiple connected devices into the serial to Ethernet converter with a single IP address.

Industrial-grade serial device server

The classic product USR-TCP232-410s, USR IOT serial device server series, adopts the TI solution and is equipped with the Cortex-M4 processor. The signal processing is more efficient and reliable. Equipped with an optimized TCP/IP protocol stack, the technology is mature, stable and reliable, and the two-way data transmission can be realized quickly. The product has passed the long-term test of high and low temperature from - 40 to 85 ℃, and the 7*24-hour stability stress test (attach photos of aging test room), it supports five working modes of TCP Client, TCP Server, UDP Client, UDP Server and httpsd Client. The data transparent transfer function can be realized by simple configuration.
