November 30, 2020 Three Things You Need to Know About Industrial Routers

Are you looking for industrial routers and cannot decide which industrial routers to go for? Or are you a network engineer or industrial plant operator who wants to choose the right industrial routers for your extreme operating conditions? There are a lot of different industrial routers each with its own capabilities. What is best for you, depends upon your utilization.

In this article, I will walk you through three factors that you should consider when purchasing your next industrial router. We shall see how these factors affect your operations, and some common applications examples. You can find out more about these applications here.

1. The Product Suite for Harsh Environment

With the introduction of IoT applications, now it's easier to communicate and study the remote areas with robots and sensors where human reach was considered dangerous. With the right devices, that can withstand extreme weather conditions, heat, and pressure, it is safe now to install applications and network devices.

Common applications

Online Monitoring and Remote Control of the Rural Sewage

Sewage water tends to contaminate the environment. Fortunately, now with IoT applications we can control and monitor this toxic environment without human effort. We can analyze the constituents of different substances in the sewage and alert the relevant authorities.

Smart Wind Power

Wind turbines provide very cheap electricity. However, they are installed at wind corridors which are very remote from the mainland. Manual monitoring, therefore, becomes very costly in addition to being dangerous. IoT applications use industrial routers that can withstand high wind gusts and provide reliable data to the control center.

2. Metal Plate Shell, Firm and Durable, Good Helper for The Industrial Customer

In industrial applications, rigidness and durability are sought. It is expensive to install and upgrade the whole installations and network. Making the right choice can save money and time and yield higher productivity. Industrial routers need to withstand wear and tear, rusting, and breakage when they are being operated in the workplace.

Common applications

Photovoltaic System Data Transmission

Everyone is looking for clean energy. Solar cells play a central role and are high in demand these days. However, solar cells need to be placed in an open full of the sunshine field to be more efficient. Devices connected to monitor the inputs and outputs of these solar cells along with other sensors need to be rigid and durable to withstand high temperatures which can go as high as 55C.

Application to Intelligent IT Room Monitoring System

IT rooms, commonly called, server rooms or data centers are up 24/7. The durability of devices to operate constantly is vital to ensure smooth connectivity. Organizations cannot afford even more router to go down as it will disrupt the whole network.

3. Network Connectivity and Security

While secure connections and communications are important to every Industrial router application, network extensibility and cloud management also play a critical role. When buying industrial routers, be sure to study the network capabilities offered by any particular router.

For large network-based applications features like VPN, Static and Dynamic IP Routing, NAT, Port Forwarding, OpenVPN (SSL VPN) are necessary to ensure secure, reliable communications and remote management.

What if you need to extend your network to other networks? What if you need to give access to your devices to the outer world networks? What if you need to add/remove network devices daily and cannot rely on static IPs? This is not plausible to change and replace routers frequently. So, make sure you are aware of your present as well as future needs.

Cloud offering is another unneglectable offering. Industrial operations might have control rooms miles away. Or you might want to remain updated with your network status daily. You might need to stay alerted when any of your sensors go down.

Common applications

Smart Cities

This is a general use case that demands network devices to be up 99% of the time along with expansion. With each passing day, our connectivity needs to be scaled to accommodate more devices. In this context, network capabilities by routers cannot be ignored to meet present and future needs.

Another use case of smart cities is self-servicing terminal devices such as vending machines, payment machines, ticket printers, etc.

Finally

In this article, we walked through three different factors. We also saw some examples to demonstrate the use of industrial routers in those scenarios. These factors are common in the IoT applications, yet sometimes are not considered when looking for industrial routers or suites. Next time when you are going to select your router keep in mind these considerations.
